It is Sunday morning and I'm watching a sports show on Univision's local station in Chicago. I'm broke and cannot afford to pay for cable or satellite t.v. and I can only access local channels on my t.v. set. Nothing against Spanish t.v., but sports is the only thing I can digest.
During a commercial break, an important announcement appears. There is a woman on the screen urging people to call their Dish Network satellite provider to prevent them from losing their signal from three of the largest Spanish t.v. networks; Univision, Telefutura and Galavision.
I like the fervor in which this woman is urging people to call and demand Dish Network to let their signal intact, or else risk losing watching novelas (soap operas) and other quality shows (her comments, not mine).
At this moment I am both appalled and content. The first, because I could not believe my eyes watching a prime t.v. network use their time and extensive reach to call people to action. Where is this sense of urgency and call to action when it's about immigrant rights??? I don't recall ever seeing something similar urging me to call my senator or state representative to support DREAM ACT or Comprehensive Immigration Reform! Can you imagine the response from the people if Dreamers had access to that media outlet????
Secondly, I was content thinking that losing the signal of those providers would only benefit our communities. I, for one, think that the above t.v. networks combined along with Telemundo do nothing but keeping our communities lagging.
Anyone who has seen any of the forementioned networks knows that all they do is exploit and denigrate women and hypersensualize everything, and as far as journalism is concerned, there is not a single quality program. It is unfortunate that the only quality Spanish network, V-me, is on cable or satellite.
