Being off from work today, I spent all morning writing thank you notes and responding to action alerts from DREAM Act support networks. While doing that, I read several stories and opinions about other dreamers and pro-immigrant rights activist.
I notice that in many stories, reports and even the responses by nativist groups, seem to emphasize sympathy or lack of for our stories.
When I ask, demand, support, encourage passing the DREAM Act, I don't do it because I want sympathy from other Americans who are able to call this home, when I can't. As much as they try, they can't put themselves in my shoes or feel my despair.
I do it because when I tell my story, and when I read those stories from those of you who have successfully finished high school and college already, I see the courage and will to thrive. Over and over, I read stories about Dreamers obtaining excellent grades, graduating with high honors, and receiving invitations for scholarships and elite colleges, etc.
I don't need and have never needed an excuse to finish my GED or Master's degree. And I don't feel the need to excuse or apologize myself for being a successful immigrant in this country. I think the same when I read other Dreamers' stories. We are living proof that undocumented immigrants come to succeed in this country. Don't be apologetic but proud for what we have accomplished when many, many born here have not.
My story is not one that should make you feel sad or sorry, on the contrary, it should be one that inspires other Americans and lawmakers to do what is right. I do not need validation for what I have achieved, and I am sorry if our stories of success frighten nativists. "Ignorance is strength," and unfortunately, in that front they have the numbers.
Our stories, are stories of success, not despair. We have achieved it, because we believe in it. Passing the DREAM Act, would add another chapter to our life stories.
I agree 100% with this post. We aren't asking for pity or sympathy. we just want that chance to go on to the next chapter, like you said our stories made from hard work and serve to inspire others.
