I have been thinking a lot lately about this crazy idea of change. Maybe is the Obama craze that still is in the air. Or, it can also be that I had a simple realization about life. The omnipresent, constant, ever occurring idea of change.
This idea comes to me most often when I read negative about immigrants, in the comments section of on-line newsprint. It used to bother me a lot. I thought about how easy it is for a person nowadays to hide behind a screen simply to spew hatred and bigotry all over. But I also thought about how these people live in a world of denial.
I am soon approaching nineteen years in this country, and have a lot to show for it (except what I need the most). I have come to the realization that the change we crave, to the nativists' despair, is inevitable. If I have learned anything about this country's long history of migration as well as from other nations worldwide is that humans are constantly on the move. Entire nations have formed, transformed and disappeared over and over again. There have always been man made frontiers, but the will is stronger than that.
Globalization has simply sped up the process. Now, we move for economic reasons whereas before it was in search of food, land and/or shelter. The fact is that, like it or not, we are here. The next census will prove to the larger society that immigrants continue to arrive in great numbers, aswering the call to progress in this great nation. One can break down each migration wave and find differences in each (some say, well "my great, great, grandfather entereed through Ellis Island and did it legally"). I am not disputing that. The common denominator is that it does not matter where people come from, Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, etc., men is on the move.
Whether it was the first wave of immigration traveling on the Mayflower to the most recent migrants risking their lives and hidding from ICE, we are constantly on the move. It is in our human nature to move and seek change, transformation, if you will. This is how history is created. How boring human history would be if it remained unchanged.
Realize that the U.S. is changing. Are you ready? Because I am. Se habla Ingles in 2010.
