I have been feeling really motivated lately with all the comprehensive immigration reform talk and possible passage of the DREAM Act.
I am specially motivated because I have noticed that just like in the Obama campaign, the youth at the forefront of this movement.
Things are changing again for the better. It's in large part our education and opportunities that give us this advantage. Things our parents may or may not have been able to do or achieve. But it also is a payoff for their courage to move and seek these opportunities for us.
It's not news to say that youth are often strong minded about changing and challenging the status quo. Now, more than ever I can see this in action. Perhaps this movement will grow and accomplish many social inequalities not fully achieved by the youth movement in the 1970's.
When I first joined the Dream Act Portal, I felt a connection with other undocumented immigrant students from other parts of the nation. I no longer felt alone. I, like many others, found a place to vent, participate and have a sense of belonging, but that was not all. Through involvement and networking, I found this site. I started looking at what others were doing to increase awareness about this unjust immigration system and the barriers in place that prevent assimilation, progress and opportunity.
Now more than ever, I have hope. I see a slow but steady pace of change in the institutions of power. I know that there is a lot more to do, but I'm hopeful because I also know there are thousands of us. This gives me hope because together we can change things. After all, reform means "changing things for the better."
