This is another great story about one successful undocumented immigrant who dared to challenge the status quo of undocumented youth. Illegal status gives Harvard grad few options--The Boston Globe.
Here's the story of Alan, a successful and intelligent young immigrant. His family has lived in the U.S. for over 20 years. He grew up in a poor neighborhood and overcame family challenges. He demonstrated an eagerness for learning and a thirst for success, both traits of any thriving American. Alan's only drawback is that like many of us, he lacks a social security number. Yet, against all odds, Alan rose to success.
After being admitted with a scholarship to Harvard and graduating with a B average, he is now faced with the uncertainty that prevails in all of us. As the article mentions, his options, unless the Dream Act passes soon, are to continue working under the radar or move to Mexico. A place he knows little about.
Undoubtedly, the postponing or deferred deportations of Walter and Taha from ICE have been a successful achievement to the Dream Act movement, stories like Alan's make it necessary to continue the struggle and push for passing the DA and CIR.
Stories as such highlight the potential that dreamers bring to this great nation. We must ensure that more stories like these make to the headlines emphasizing the need to reform immigration. The nativists outnumber us when it comes to making ignorant, racial and obsolete comments about successful stories like this. We must see to it that the human potential and the "courage to be" does not go unnoticed.
